Two surfers were bitten by sharks on the same day in New South Wales, Australia, while another family learned one their own was killed by a tiger shark off the coast of Nicaragua.
Tim McAndrew, 32, and friends were going for an after-work surf March 15 at Crowdy Bay. He had been in the water about a minute when he felt something tug his leg rope and felt a to hit his right leg. At first, he thought it was one of his mates playing a prank, but when he looked down, he saw blood.
McAndrew, who is from Hunter, quickly yelled a warning to his friends to exit the water. Once he was back on the beach a friend grabbed a first aid kit and wrapped the injured foot and leg. On the way to the hospital, he called ahead and learned he was the second person bitten by a shark within the hour.
After treatment, he was released from the hospital, but apart from serious swelling, he should make a full recovery.
Fatal shark attack off coast of Nicaragua.
Antonio Straccialini, 56, (reported as Anonito Roseto Degli locally) was off Isla De San Andres March 18.
Reports indicate the Italian tourist may have been riding a jet ski prior to entering the clear water off La Piscinita.
A witness said the Italian was a good swimmer and had been out for some time before swimming back to shore and then back even farther. On his way back in, he started screaming and was surrounded by blood. Mauricio Valdonado swam to aid the tourist and pulled him back to shore.
Straccialini was bitten on the right thigh above the knee by an estimated 8-foot-long tiger shark.
Unfortunately, the wound was severe and photos from the scene show Straccialini an unresponsive, lying in a pool of blood missing a substantial portion of his outer thigh.
He was taken to the Clarence Lynd Newball Hospital but may have expired on the beach.
Locals took video of a large tiger shark swimming feet from shore after the incident. Some locals said they had warned against swimming as sharks had been spotted before the incident.
There has also been debate as to whether people have been feeding fish in the spot to take photos. An undated photo shows two large tigers swimming in the area as people on shore watch.
