A New Jersey woman was bitten on the leg by a shark in South Carolina.
The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, spent as much time at the beach as should could growing up.
“Ever since I was a kid, I always loved the ocean,” she told Tracking Sharks. “I’ve swam with with stingrays, eels, and barracudas and that never bothered me.”
Unfortunately, as she was swimming May 24, off the main beach of Kiawah Island she would have a run-in with a shark.
It was her first visit to South Carolina, and she said the water was a little choppy and incredibly cloudy as she swam in the waist-deep water.
Around 1:30 p.m. a shark grabbed the 30-year-old’s left calf biting down before releasing and swimming away.
Despite multiple lacerations on both sides of her calf, she was able to swim around 40 feet back to shore where she was treated on the beach and then transported to the hospital.
“Funny enough stingrays and sharks were always my favorite animals growing up, but now when I see the water I can’t help but feel afraid of what’s underneath,” she said. “…before I wouldn’t give it a second thought.”
Another person was bitten by a shark in June
An unidentified male was in the water June 21, at Pirate Family Campgrounds in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The teenager was injured by a shark and taken from the beach in an ambulance.
Lifeguards cleared the water after the incident, but very little public information has been published about the incident.
Both locations have been marked on the 2022 Shark Attack Map.
