Shark bite in the South Pacific 12/16/13

A 35-year-old Portuguese national went into the water to untangle fishing net and was bitten by a shark. The man suffered a severe injury to his arm.

The incident occurred some 740 miles southeast of Tarawa Atoll in the Republic of Kiribati, which is southwest of the Marshall Islands

The U.S. flagged vessel Friesland contacted the U.S. Coast Guard alerting them that a crew member was in need of t medical care following the shark bite.

The unidentified man was picked up at Tarawa by a HC-130 Hercules airplane and flown back to Oahu.  He is in stable condition.
