A 44-year-old man is in critical condition after a shark attack near an Oahu beach left him with what witnesses describe as extreme and gruesome injuries to both feet and lower legs on Saturday.
The incident took place 50-100 yards off the shore of Lanikai beach and is the sixth this year for Hawaii. This is the second bite off Oahu in a little over a week.
Shortly before noon, the man whose name has not been released, was swimming to shore with a companion when he was bitten by what witnesses describe as a 7 to 12 foot tiger shark.
Both swimmers were rescued and brought to shore by two kayakers. Emergency services were called and transported the victim to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. His companion was not injured.
The location has been marked on the 2015 shark attack bites tracking map.
