Portuguese Fisherman bitten by a Shark
A Portuguese fisherman has been bitten by a shark.
The unidentified man was fishing around 200 miles off the coast of Povoa de Varzim, in northern Portugal on July 26.
He was on board the fishing vessel Filipa Miguel when he was bitten on the leg. The wound was severe with the man experiencing muscle tissue loss and uncontrolled bleeding.
Members of the crew contacted emergency personnel using the Portuguese alert system and emergency procedures were implemented. The Coordination Centre for Maritime Search and Rescue of Lisbon with the assistance of the INEM-Emergecny Patients Guidance Center at Sea and the Portuguese Air Force coordinated to recover the fisherman.
Due to the off shore location of the boat, both a fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter were dispatched to the scene. The man was recovered from the vessel and flown to the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and then transported to the St. John Hospital in stable condition.
This is the fifty first shark attack bite of 2016. Five of which were fatal. Twenty-one reported in the US, with thirteen occurring in Florida. Eleven have occurred in Australia, three of which were fatal.
All locations have been marked on the 2016 shark attack bites tracking map.
