A fatal shark attack has been caught on film in Australia.
An unknown angler was fishing Feb 16. at Little Bay, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, when he spotted a wetsuit-clad man swimming across the bay around 4 p.m.
He watched a large shark take Simon Nellist, 35, underwater, yelling as the shark splashed and continued to attack. Video of the incident shows a shark hitting the non-responsive scuba instructor multiple times.
As the videographer and another angler watch in horror, Nellist is seen floating, as the shark returns again and disappears under the waves with the body.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m. a rescue helicopter and four ambulances were at Buchan Point with police. Authorities were able to locate some of the Nellist’s remains and added green die to the water in hopes of locating more.
Radwick City Council has closed several beaches for 24 hour and the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will be deploying smart drumlines to catch sharks.
This appears to be the first known shark attack in the area since Marcia Hathaway was killed by a suspected bull shark or whaler in 1963.
Earlier this week, a diver was killed by a shark in Mexico.
Victor Estrella, was commercial diving Feb. 12 for scallops around 10 miles off Yavaros, Sonora, Mexico. He was using a surface-supplied air system which pumps air through hoses to the diver below.
His dive tender spotted the air hoses moving erratically and began pulling Estrella up. As Estrella neared the surface, he spotted a large shark. As the tender tried to pull the injured diver into the boat the shark grabbed the diver until the tender could pull him from the water.
Unfortunately, the shark severed Mr. Estella’s leg and he passed away.
Both locations have been marked on the 2022 Shark Attack Map.
