A 6 1/2 foot long Hammerhead Shark was filmed Tuesday swimming toward the beach. A woman on a raft panicked at the site of the shark fin breaking the surface, and was unable to paddle back to the beach. Life Guard Colton Boney swam out and assisted the woman back to shore by placing himself between the shark and the woman. The shark swam around the shallows for about 15 minutes before leaving the area. Swimmers returned to the water about an hour later.
There have only been 17 hammerhead unprovoked attacks/bites reported from 1580-2013 according to the International Shark Attack File. All of those were non-fatal.
