An 8-year-old girl is healing after losing her leg to a suspected tiger shark.
The girl, identified only as Nicole, was accompanied by her father to the beach Jan. 28 at Praia do Sueste, Fernando de Norona, Pernambucco, Brazil.
Around 10:30 a.m. Nicole was bitten on her thigh. She was taken to the Hospital Sao Lucas before being transported by air to the hospital Portugues in Recife where her leg was amputated.
Thankfully, she survived the incident and was released from the hospital Feb. 1.
A large tiger shark was filmed swimming in the area after the attack and beaches have been closed to swimmers.
Several other serious shark attacks have occurred in the country.
British scuba diver attacked by bull shark
A scuba diver was attacked by a bull shark Playa del Coco, Costa Rica.
The British citizen apparently paid for a Feb. 8 dive excursion with a group of family members off Playa del Coco.
During the dive, an estimated 10-foot (3m) bull shark grabbed her arm. She was able to fight off the shark but suffered significant injuries to her right arm and left hand.
She was taken by private emergency helicopter to a medical center in Santa Ana where she received treatment for the wound.
Local sources said the area is known to have bull sharks that can be quite aggressive.
Another vacationing diver was killed in a shark attack in Costa Rica in 2017.
Rohina Bhandar, 49, was diving off Isla del Coco when a tiger shark began biting her legs.
Her dive master attempted to fight off the shark and despite being injured himself, was able to drive it away.
She was taken back to her liveabord and treated by several vacation medical personal, but later died.
